Featured Projects

Curation Tools @ HoodQ

Gathered requirements from stakeholders and architected a complete rewrite of HoodQ’s POI curation tools and ETL pipeline, which abstracted and extracted 3000 custom Ruby classes into a block-based admin-space visual tool, freeing up dev time and enabling curators to manage public data retrieval. Utilised pg_tree to create a queriable hierarchy of POIs across administrative levels and added post-update recaching of geospatial queries to enable additional complex calculations. Acted as advisor on further enhancements to further enhancements of the ETL tooling, leading to the creation of business-critical internal tooling.

Front-end Overhaul @ HoodQ

Championed and led the extraction of components utilising ViewComponent and dry-types libraries to reduce duplication and drift and to speed development time of new projects. Acted as project owner, adding additional components to support new initiatives and providing architectural guidance to other devs in adding new components. Additionally extracted components into a rubygem to be shared across company holdings. Reduced total development time on new features by ~50%.

Site Reliability and Devops Work @ HoodQ

Containerized multiple applications in the early days of Docker and shifted operations to AWS Fargate off of an EOL operating system at an expensive hosting provider, leading to a 5x reduction of infra costs. Wrote and maintained the company’s Ansible IaC scripts.

Co-managed ops and site reliability with CTO; led O11y improvement efforts.

Six years later, after compute needs and costs ballooned, championed and led consolidation of applications and de-clouding to bare metal Hetzner machines, leading to a 20x reduction of infra costs. Wrote management and hardening scripts.

Brainstem Self-Documenting JSON API @ Mavenlink

Extended the capacity of the Brainstem Ruby library to allow for generation of OpenAPI documents by means of deep Rails introspection.

Technical Advising @ Generations Midwifery Care

Provided technical advice and assistance. Built out analytics and marketing pipeline; wrote email marketing campaigns; coached team members; established appropriate security and backup regimes.

NB: In Canada, midwifery is highly regulated, integrated into the health care system, and requires a 4-year health sciences degree to practice.

Personal

  • I co-founded RubyPunks, an invitation-based community working toward expanding inclusivity and opportunity within the Ruby community.
  • I homestead with my wife and three kids. We raise chickens, rabbits, bees, and farm a big garden each year.
  • In my spare time, I enjoy woodworking and singing (I'm a semi-professional baritone).
  • I've been working on latte art but to my chagrin still produce inconsistent microfoam.
